Soundtrack of My Summer, Unlike Any Other
I don't know about you, but certain songs have the ability to instantly transport me back to a specific time or place. Maybe I heard a song a lot during that time, or maybe it just holds some sort of significance. Whatever the case, music is almost as good as smell when it comes to recalling memories. Summer songs seem to be particularly impactful on this front. I'm assuming it's because during the summer I'm less focused on school and grades and do more things worth remembering in the first place. Or maybe the best music just comes out during the summer.
This weekend is the last time my OG JET friends and I will get to go out together, which got me thinking back to the first time. It was the middle of August last year, and the thing that stands out most was on Friday night at like 1:00 am we decided things were a little too boring and ended up in a convenience store dancing to Zedd's Stay the Night (there's definitely a video of it somewhere). Since then, that's become our song, and anytime it comes on, even in the middle of the day, if we're together, it's suddenly a good time.
So on the topic of summer anthems, here are some others from ~summers past~
(Bonus points to anyone who can tell me what song the title references!)
2006: Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield
As soon as the intro to this song begins to play, I'm immediately back in the exact seat that I sat in every morning during my summer school computer class. I'm facing a wall near the door, the A/C is on a little too high, and the carpet under my feet is an atrocious dark orange color. You know how radio stations tend to play the same three popular songs of the time on repeat? This was one of them in 2006, and my summer school teacher always played the same radio station all class long as we practiced our typing and put together powerpoints. (In case you were wondering, the other two songs were "Bad Day" and "You're Beautiful")
2009: Again - Yui
In the summer of 2009, I took my first overseas trip without my parents. Thanks to winning a competition, along with two of my classmates and my Japanese teacher, I got to go to Japan all expenses paid for ten days. During part of our trip, we stayed with my teacher's sister in her home in Tokyo, and every night over a plate of the most delicious grapes I'd ever tasted (I still maintain that Japanese grapes are the best in the world), we'd watch TV. At that point, none of us really understood very much Japanese yet, so we stuck mainly to music shows and soccer, and this song, no matter what was on TV, always came up somehow I swear during the five days we were there, I saw the music video more than ten times.
2012: Lights - Ellie Goulding
So if you look into my iTunes, you'll notice that I've had this entire album since 2010 when it first came out, but for some reason, 2012 was the year it went mainstream. I distinctly remember hearing it for the first time not playing through my speakers. It was in the juniors section of the Ala Moana Macy's, and they had the video playing on the TVs that were mounted from the ceiling. And because I'm not an obnoxious hipster it was less of an "ugh" moment and more of an "omg isn't she great guys I hope she finally gets the exposure she deserves" one. Clearly I was onto something. (I'd also like to take this time to mention that I called Mø's rise in popularity as well, so)
2013: Alive - Krewella
Krewella headlined Summer Wonderland 2013, which was my very first big EDM event, and if that's not significant, I don't know what is. Since then music festivals and concerts have become pretty significant in my life, leading to countless adventures, memories, and new friends, and I really do believe that this song started it all. I distinctly remember waiting until the day before the event to buy the ticket, and I don't think I would have decided to go at all had this song not been on repeat all summer long and had I not been so eager to experience it live.
